18.09.2018: Learning to Drive + Bampton, England

Today started off as a struggle! Courtnie and I rented a vehicle because we have been spending a bit of time in smaller villages. We did all the paper work with Enterprise and got a vehicle but the catch was it was a standard. I am not good at driving standard, and don't imagine that I would be any better driving standard on the opposite side of the road! Courtnie decided she would try it as she used to have a standard vehicle when she first moved to Calgary. We did not make it very far down the road from the Enterprise before we were both frantically calling around to nearby Enterprises inquiring about any automatic vehicle. When we returned the manual vehicle to the original Enterprise, they magically found an automatic for us to drive! Courtnie and I took turns driving to the village of Bampton, which is the village that is featured in the TV series Downton Abbey. We both did alright driving, but probably have ulcers from the narrow roads, fast traffic, and tight squeezes through some hedges when approaching a semi hahah! They are currently shooting the Downton movie, so the villlage had props set up around the filming locations. Even if you are not a Downton Abbey fan, the village is really incredible to see!

The building (originally the town library) gets converted into a hospital for the show. Right now they have a small gift shop set up in there.

The church where so much happens in the show... Sybil and Branson's marriage, Mary's wedding, Matthew's funeral! And more that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

A tomb in one of the naves in the church.

Carefully cross stitched kneelers.

The stained glass was incredibly detailed.

This hurt our hearts...

This one looked much too new to be in the cemetery, and when we got closer we realized it was for the show! RIP Sybil...

Casey gave me shit for putting my coffee cup on the (fake) tomb

Another prop used for the show! The memorial of Mrs. Pattmore's nephew Archie.

The post office decorated for bunting that we can only assume is for WWII

Supper at a local pub in Bampton

Driving back to Burghclere (on the opposite side of it all!)
