03.11.2018: St Benedict Chapel, Sumvitg, Switzerland

Over the last couple days Court and I have been taking in the therme pools and today we caught a bus and train to go and see the St Benedict Chapel. The chapel was designed by Peter Zumthor, who also designed the Therme as mentioned in our last blog post.

Once we finally got to the village of Sumvitg we had a 2.6 km hike that would eventually lead us to the chapel! Tomorrow we are heading to Zurich.

Near the town square of  Vals, Switzerland

Touring around Vals

A unique villa that is designed into the hill side!

Long story short, someone with a lot of money paid an expensive architect to design the tallest standing structure in Europe here in Vals. As from the pictures above, Vals is a tiny mountain village, and this skyscraper was planned to sit on the edge of town near the therme. This is model is of that design.

Courtnie was furious about this and we asked some of the villagers what the feeling was about this project, and everyone we talked to really hated the idea! Turns out that the natural springs are very close to the surface, and in the village there is a well known water company that bottles from the spring. SO the skyscraper cannot be made without completely blocking the water supply, and because of that it does not seem likely that the skyscraper will be built. Courtnie thought this was a ludicrous idea to build Europe's tallest structure in this quaint mountain village!

I had to hold Courtnie back from spitting on this
