I plan on returning to the Black Forest again some day. We only had the day here and it was not nearly enough for me, as I would like to hike in the forest for at least a week. The Black Forest is famous for Black Forest cake, cuckoo clocks, castles and tiny villages throughout. However, it is also the inspiration for the settings of the Brother Grimm's stories: Sleeping Beauty, Hansel & Gretel and Rapunzel. The area is associated with legends of werewolves, witches and wizards.
The trail Court and I hiked was to the Ravennaschlucht Christmas Market that we were told about by our Air B&B owner. So we drove the two hours to a small village called Hinterzarten and hiked to the market. The walk was okay, but because we were along the gorge we were not in the areas associated with the fairy tales. The Black Forest is aptly named because the spruce trees do not let light onto the forest floor, so this adds to the mysterious setting and provided inspiration for the stories. So we were hoping to be able to hike a trail that would really give us the feeling that we were indeed in the place of magic and mysterious legends! However, I cannot complain too much because the Ravennaschlucht market was pretty spectacular and magical in its own right, as it was under a huge viaduct and nestled into the forest.
Tomorrow we are heading to Dusseldorf to spend a few days there and catch up with a friend from our time in Toronto!
