08.12.2018: Bruges, Belgium

We took the train from our AirBnB in Blankenberge (which is not a very nice spot and hence why we're going to leave a day earlier for Amsterdam-- but the beach here is lovely!), to Bruges. The city is a famous tourist spot in Belgium, with lots of cobblestone streets, canals, and medieval architecture, as well as for being the setting of one of Casey's favourite movies In Bruges. If you haven't seen it yet, we highly recommend it! Not really for children though...it has some dark humour. So fair warning, there are a few quotes from the movie in this write up.

Tons of quaint hidden passages that were decorated for Christmas

This was before the crowds of people got really intense!

Ken: Ray, you're about the worst tourist in the world.
Ray: Ken, I grew up in Dublin. I love Dublin. If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me, but I didn't so it doesn't.

"It's a fairytale town, isn't it? How's a fairytale town not somebody's f*cking thing?" -Harry

Caught in action

The clock tower that Ken fell from in the movie. Quite a bit higher than they made it seem!

The entrance to the Basilica of the Holy Blood

This church contains a vial that is said to hold the blood of Jesus Christ, brought here by the crusaders in 1256. We were able to stand in a line to see it up close, but unfortunately no photos were allowed.

Beautiful canals everywhere!

After almost 3 months on the road, and using the same camera, Case has almost got the hang of the focus part on the manual setting... almost.

There we go!

The kid is on fire.

There's something about this house and back yard I loved.

Ken (and Casey): We shall strike a balance between culture and fun.

The hotel from the movie where Ray and Harry were having their shootout.

We also went to a torture museum. It was... informative, but maybe a little much for me.

It's located in a basement structure that used to be a prison. It smelled something awful.

Nope.

Going up the bell tower!

"Been to the top of the tower?"

"Yeah, yeah, it's rubbish."

"It is? Guidebook said it's a must see!"

Buildings in the square all lit up for the Christmas crowds!

The bell tower was playing Christmas carols for most of the day, and at one point Case and I recognized that it was playing the song "River Flows in You" by Yiruma (a personal favourite of ours.)

A bakery called Juliette. I had to stop to take a photo, and go in and buy something, because I miss her like crazy and have been thinking of her quite a bit lately. ♡
